“استراحة المحارب الحقيقي هي الموت فقط ..”

تشير الإحصائيات في الهند أن كل 50 ثانية يقوم أحد الوالدين بقتل ابنته. يبلغ عدد الفتيات المفقودات (0:6 سنوات) إلى 629 ألف فتاة كل سنة. يتم التّخلص من أغلبهن عن طريق الإجهاض والأخريات يتم قتلهن، إهمالهن أو التّخلّي عنهن تحت رحمة الظروف. تعود جذور تلك المشكلة إلى تفضيل المجتمع للجنس الذكوري نظرًا لعدم قدرة الفتاة على المُشاركة في ميادين العمل، المحافظة على استمرارية اسم العائلة، مسؤولة عن تقديم المهر للزوج، وأخيرًا لانتقالها إلى منزل أقارب زوجها مما يمنعها من الاهتمام بوالديها عندما يتقدّما بالعمر. لدى الفتاة الأولى في الأسر الهندية فرصة أكبر للنجاة عند ولادتها، حيث يتم الاحتفاظ بـ96 فتاة مقابل كل 100 ولد. تقل فرصة نجاة الفتاة الثانية، وتنعدم في الغالب عند الفتاة الثالثة ويعود السبب لعدم تحمل الأسر لأكثر من تكاليف مهر واحد فقط. أثارت القضية حفيظتي وعلمت أنها ستكون رحلتي القادمة لكتابة هذه الرواية. اتّجهت إلى الهند للبحث عن الحقائق حيث عملت جاهدة طوال شهرين للحصول على تصاريح لمقابلة الأشخاص المسؤولين عن رعاية هؤلاء الفتيات سواء من الناحية المادية أو الاجتماعية أو حتى القانونية ليسمحن لي بمشاركة قصصهن ومقابلتهن شخصيًّا، على الرغم أنهن لم يمانعن أن أستخدم أسماءهن الحقيقية إلا أنني قمت بتغييرها واكتفيت فقط بقصصهن، فالقصص تكفل أسماء أصحابها.
