حظيت الدروس التي ألقاها الفيلسوف الفرنسي الشهير ميشيال فوكو باهتمام كبير من قبل قراءه سواء من أبناء جيله أو من الأجيال التي أتت بعده، ووجدت في مؤلفاته فلسفة من نوع جديد تقوم على اكتشاف مفاهيم وحقول معرفية جديدة لم تطأها أرض الفلسفة بعد، لذا أتى الاهتمام مضاعفاً بكلّ ما قاله أو خطه.

لقد تولى عملية جمع وإعداد دروسه مجموعة من ألمع وأشهر تلامذة فوكو وعلى رأسهم فرانسوا أوالد ودانيال دفير، لقد درس فوكو في الكوليج دي فرانس من كانون الثاني/يونيو 1971 حتى حزيران/يونيو 1984 تاريخ وفاته، وقد كان الكرسي الذي يشغله يسمى “تاريخ الأنساق الفكرية”. ومن المعروف أن نظام التعليم بالكوليج يخضع لقاعدة خاصة، إذ يجب على الأستاذ المنتخب في هذه الهيئة أن يدرس ستاً وعشرين ساعة في السنة، يقدم فيها بحثاً أصيلاً وجديداً، أما حضور هذه الدروس فكان حراً، كما أن المؤسسة لا تمنح شهادات علمية.
