على العكس، إذاً، من رواياته الكبرى التي اعتاد دوستويفسكي أن يعالج فيها موضوعات إيمانية وفلسفية واجتماعية، يكاد البعد الأساسي في «الزوج الأبدي» أن يكون بعداً سيكولوجياً. وهذا يبدو منذ صفحاتها الأولى، إذ تقدم لنا رجلاً في الأربعين من عمره، ناجحاً اجتماعياً يدعى السيد فلشانينوف. هذا السيد الذي نراه منذ البداية مضطراً إلى البقاء في بطرسبرغ، إذ أجّل رحلة كان يعتزم القيام بها إلى جنوب روسيا، يجلس شبه تائه بين مشكلات قضائية تتعلق بقطعة أرض يملكها، وبين ذكريات شبابه التي تنقض عليه، ما يجعله يحس الآن أن «الأمور تسير من سيّئ إلى أسوأ» وبأن شيخوخته تنقض عليه فجأة مع انه لم يصل حقاً إلى الأربعين بعد. وها هو الآن غارق في الذكريات التي تدور أساساً من حول كل أنواع الموبقات التي ارتكبها خلال ذلك الشباب، والتي تجعله اليوم حزيناً نادماً.

والحكاية أنه يحدث ذات ليلة أن يأتي لزيارة فلشانينوف، من دون توقع، شخص يدعى تروسوتسكي، وهو الموظف السابق الذي سنفهم بسرعة أن زوجته كانت، قبل سنوات، عشيقة لفلشانينوف. أما الخبر الذي يحمله الضيف المباغت معه فمزدوج: فهو من ناحية يبلغ صاحب البيت أن المرأة قد ماتت، وأنها من ناحية ثانية، تركت وراءها ابنة صغيرة، من المفترض أن تكون ابنة فلشانينوف لا ابنة ضيفه. يقر صاحبنا بالأمر ويقرر أن يتعهد تربية الطفلة وتنشئتها. غير أن هذه سرعان ما تمرض وتموت، ما يجعل نفس الأب (العشيق) تمتلئ بالحزن ويزيد من وقع الكآبة والندم على فؤاده. ولسوف نفهم هنا من خلال ذكريات فلشانينوف، التي تروى عنه هنا بالواسطة، انه عاد والتقى تروسوتسكي مرتين بعد ذلك اللقاء الأول الصاعق. لكن الذي حدث هو أن هذا الأخير كان خلال ذلك الوقت قد خطب امرأة أخرى وتزوجها. وإذ زاره غريمه السابق في تينك المرتين، أحس العريس الجديد أن مثل هذه الزيارات قد تجعل بيته المعاد بناؤه في خطر، حيث يلوح واضحاً أن «التنافس» القديم بين من يسميه دوستويفسكي «الزوج الأبدي» أي تروسوتسكي ومن يطلق عليه لقب «العاشق الأبدي» أي فلشانينوف قد يعود إلى الوجود في أية لحظة من اللحظات. ومن هنا يحاول «الزوج» أن يطعن غريمه بموسى حلاقة، إذ خشي، بالطبع أن تتكرر الآن من جديد، الحكاية الكئيبة التي عاشها من جراء ارتباط العشيق بزوجته الأولى الراحلة. لكن هذا العدوان يحدث قبل اقتران تروسوتسكي بزوجته الثانية. أما بعد القران وإذ تحدث زيارة جديدة، لا يسع العريس إلا أن يحاول، بالهدوء، إقناع الآخر بأن يتوقف عن زيارته. فيقتنع الآخر ولكن بعد جهد، ليس لأنه يريد الاستيلاء على المرأة الجديدة، ولكن لأن تلك هي طباعه التي ليس في يده تغييرها كما يبدو.
