كانت الثكنات في مركز تدريب القوات الخاصة عبارة عن مبنى غير مميز مكون من ثلاثة طوابق يقع على الشاطئ في مدينة كورونادو بولاية كاليفورنيا، ويبعد عن مياه المحيط الهادي بمسافة لا تزيد على ٩٠ مترًا. لم يكن هناك مكيف هواء في المبنى، وفي الليل، عندما تفتح النوافذ، كنت تسمع صوت المياه تزحف على الشاطئ عند المد وصوت الأمواج وهي ترتطم بالصخور.
كانت الغرف في الثكنات منظمة للغاية. كانت غرف الضباط، حيث كنت أقطن مع ثلاثة من زملائي، تحتوي على أربعة أسرَّة، وخزانة لتعلق بها زيك الرسمي، ولا شيء آخر. في فترة الصباح، حين كنت أقيم في الثكنات، كنت أنهض من “النقالة” التي أنام عليها، وأبدأ على الفور بترتيب فراشي. كانت تلك هي المهمة الأولى لليوم. اليوم الذي كنت أعلم جيدًا أنه سيكون مليئًا بفحص الزي الرسمي، والسباحة لمسافات طويلة، والعدو لمسافات أطول، وميادين تخطي العوائق، وإزعاج لا ينتهي من معلمي القوات الخاصة.
صاح قائد التدريب، الملازم أول بحري “دانل ستيوارد”: “انتباه!”، عندما دخل المعلم الغرفة. وقفت عند قاعدة الفراش وضربت كعبَيْ حذائي معًا، ووقفت منتصبًا في ثبات بينما اقترب أحد ضباط الصف مني. بدأ المعلم، في صرامة ودون أن يحمل وجهه أية تعبيرات، التفتيش الروتيني من خلال فحص قبعة زيي الرسمي الخضراء للتأكد من أن “الغطاء” المكون من ثمانية أوجه، كان صلبًا ومصبوبًا بالشكل الصحيح. مسح ببصره، من قمة رأسي وحتى أخمص قدميَّ، كل سنتيمتر من زيي. هل كانت طية القميص والسروال متلائمتين؟ هل تبرق قطعة الحزام النحاسية كالمرآة؟ هل حذائي لامع بما يكفي لكي يرى انعكاس أصابعه عليه؟ وعندما شعر بالرضا بأنني قد حققت المعايير العالية كمتدرب في القوات الخاصة، انتقل ليفحص فراشي.

استدار المعلم بسرعة ليواجهني، ثم نظر في عينيَّ وأومأ برأسه. لم يكن يقول أي شيء مطلقًا. لم يكن ترتيب فراشي بالشكل الصحيح أمرًا يستحق الإطراء، بل كان أمرًا متوقعًا مني؛ فقد كان ترتيب الفراش هو المهمة الأولى لليوم، وكان ترتيبه بالشكل الصحيح أمرًا مهمًّا؛ فقد كان دليلًا على مدى انضباطي، كما كان دليلًا على اهتمامي بالتفاصيل، وسيكون في نهاية المطاف تذكرة على أني فعلت أمرًا ما بالشكل الصحيح، أمرًا أفخر به، مهما كان صغيرًا.
