«نائب القنصل» الذي تحمل الرواية اسمه، أو صفته، ليس إلا واحدا من شخصياتها. ربما كانت آن ماري ستريتر زوجة السفير الفرنسي أولى منه بحمل العنوان، أو حتى مايكل ريتشارد، عشيقها السابق – الباقي يشاطرها زمن ما بعد الخبز، أو ربما يستحق ذلك كل من أولئك الآخرين الذين تتشكل منهم حلقة العيش والسهر. هؤلاء محكومون بأن يكونوا ملازمين بعضهم بعضا، فهم بِيض كالكوتا، موظفو السفارة الفرنسية وقنصلياتها، ومن يمتّون إليهم بصلة.
كل منهم إذن يستحقّ أن تسمى الرواية باسمه، طالما أنهم حاضرون فيها بالتساوي. أما فتاة الرابعة عشرة، الكمبودية الهاربة أو المطرودة من بيتها، فتبدو كما لو أنها استُبعدت بعد أن كانت احتمالا أول للتسمية. لقد بدأت الرواية بها وحدها، مرافقة إياها في الرحلة التي كانت المسافات فيها تقاس بحدود البلدان واتساع جغرافياتها. من كمبوديا إلى سيام (تايلند) إلى بورما إلى كلكوتا في الهند، مشت سائرة على قدميها. وحدها، بلا معرفة بالطرقات، ولا ماذا يؤكل منها، وأي الأماكن لا يشكل النوم فيها خطرا. كانت تسعى إلى الوصول إلى أبعد ما تستطيع، إلى حيث تنتهي الأرض كما تقول وهي تخاطب نفسها. وقد تابعت مارغريت دوراس هذه الرحلة، ليس بوصف مراحلها، بل باتساع قدرتها الكتابية ورهافتها الأسلوبية.
